Basic Ideas of the Civil Rights Act of 1964


Enforces the Constitutional right to vote in federal elections


Justice Department can sue public schools that remain segregated. (The Justice Department is run by the Attorney General, who works for the president.)


Outlaws segregation in public accommodations: hotels, theaters, restaurants, etc.


Outlaws discrimination in federally assisted/funded programs. (If a person or organization receives federal money it can not be segregated.)


Outlaws hiring discrimination based on race, religion, or national origin
